If you’ve been looking for a flexible, computer-based way to manage your to-do lists, then you’ll want to take a look at Remember the Milk, a wonderful, free task manager that’s been getting plenty of positive buzz. I’ve been using it for about 6 months and consider it a central part of my ADR practice management setup. And while you can use Remember the Milk as a stand-alone, when paired with the Google services I’ve been discusssing, you’ve got a super project management system.
Remember the Milk makes creating, editing and managing to-do lists a cinch. Even—dare I utter the words—fun! Though by no means an exhaustive list of all the things Remember the Milk can do, these are some of my favorite features:
- Syncing my task list with the calendar program on my hard drive, my Google calendar, and my Palm Treo.
- Sharing task lists with individuals with whom I’m collaborating on a project.
- Emailing a task directly to my account, including due date and associated notes, and having it automatically show up on my Remember the Milk list.
- Reminder notices for critical tasks, which can arrive by email, text message on my phone, or IM (instant messaging).
- Tagging tasks according to project or location where they’ll be done (home, office) for easy searching and organizing.
- Setting the priority level of a task, which affects where it shows up on the due date’s task list (most to least important).
If you’re using Google’s personalized homepage, you can add your Remember the Milk to-do list as an element of it. Easy instructions for doing so can be found at Add Your Tasks to Google Personalized Homepage.
If you’re using Google calendar and want to add Remember the Milk to it, simple instructions can be found at Add Your Tasks to Google Calendar.
And if you’re a die-hard list maker, you can even create and access your grocery list from your web-enabled phone. See Use Remember the Milk from Your Phone for details.
The folks at Remember the Milk just keep adding neat features, so if you sign up for an account, be sure to read the blog for updates. Over past months they’d added a healthy list of languages, including Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Dutch, UK English, French, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, Bosnian, German, Swedish, Turkish, Czech, Italian, Korean, Polish and Russian.
Gotta love this little gem of a task manager.

How do you sync your TRM list with your Palm? I haven’t been able to figure out a way to do it!
Hi there, NNR, thanks for stopping by. I get RTM onto my Treo through my Google calendar, using RTM’s gCal widget. At the time I’m writing this, I have a system set up that syncs my Google calendar with my desktop calendar via SpanningSync (which I highly recommend…it works perfectly for me), and syncs my Treo and desktop calendar. So, I’ve always got my calendar, along with RTM, in 3 places: online, on my computer, and on my Treo. It took me about 30 minutes to get it all set up, but now works without any new effort. Hope that helps!
